Bone Waste: What You Need to Know
Bones – from meat offcuts, food preparation or butchery – are organic waste and should not be placed in recycling bins. If disposed of incorrectly, they can attract vermin, produce odour and generate methane gas in landfill.
Their disposal method depends on the volume and setting (home or commercial).
How to dispose of bones
In residential settings, bones should go into the general waste bin unless your council provides a food organics service. Commercial kitchens can divert bones to industrial composting or food waste collection services. Some pet food processors may also accept clean bone waste.
Environmental impact of bone waste
Decomposing bones in landfill release methane and contribute to the environmental load of food waste. Where possible, diverting bones to compost or bioenergy systems supports nutrient recovery and reduces emissions.
