Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling: What You Need to Know
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools and other rechargeable devices. While efficient and long-lasting, they contain hazardous materials and pose serious risks if disposed of incorrectly – including fire, explosion, or chemical leakage.
They must never be placed in general waste or kerbside recycling bins.

Safe recycling of lithium-ion batteries
Take spent batteries to dedicated e-waste recycling centres, battery drop-off points (often found at supermarkets and hardware stores), or council collection events. Cover terminals with tape to prevent short-circuiting and place them in a sealed bag during storage or transport.

Recovery and hazard mitigation
Recycling lithium-ion batteries allows for recovery of valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper – helping reduce the environmental impact of mining. Proper disposal also lowers the risk of fires in waste trucks and facilities, supporting safer and more sustainable waste systems.
