Plasterboard recycling: What You Need to Know
Plasterboard – also known as gyprock or drywall – is used for interior walls and ceilings. It is made from gypsum plaster sandwiched between layers of heavy-duty paper. When clean and dry, it can be recycled into new products or used as soil conditioner.
However, offcuts contaminated with paint, adhesives or insulation must be treated as construction waste.
How to recycle plasterboard
Keep plasterboard waste dry and free of foreign materials. Drop clean offcuts at a construction recycling facility or plasterboard-specific recovery centre. Smaller household quantities can sometimes be collected by building supply retailers or through council hard waste pickups.
Recycling advantages
Gypsum recovered from plasterboard reduces reliance on virgin materials and avoids methane emissions that occur when organic paper layers decompose in landfill. Recycling also diverts heavy materials from landfill and reduces overall construction site waste.
