Drywall Disposal: What You Need to Know
Drywall – also known as plasterboard or gyprock – is a common building material used for internal walls and ceilings. It consists of a gypsum core encased in paper and can produce large volumes of waste during construction, renovation or demolition projects.
While clean drywall can often be recycled, contaminated or broken pieces are typically sent to landfill unless separated correctly.
How to dispose of drywall
Drywall waste should be kept clean and dry during removal. Many construction recycling facilities accept drywall for gypsum recovery, provided it’s free from paint, tiles, screws or insulation. Bag smaller offcuts and never place drywall in household recycling or general waste bins.
Recycling and reuse benefits
Gypsum from drywall can be reused in new plasterboard, soil conditioners and cement. Recycling helps reduce landfill pressure, avoids leachate issues and conserves natural resources such as mined gypsum.
