Polystyrene Packaging Recycling: What You Need to Know
Polystyrene – also known as expanded polystyrene (EPS) or Styrofoam – is a lightweight packaging material used to cushion goods during transport. While it’s technically recyclable, most kerbside systems do not accept it due to its low density and high contamination risk.
It should never be placed in your household recycling bin.
How to dispose of polystyrene responsibly
Check if your council or local recycling centre accepts clean, white polystyrene packaging. Drop-off programs may exist for expanded polystyrene from electronics or furniture packaging. Food-contaminated polystyrene (e.g. meat trays or takeaway containers) must go to general waste.
Why polystyrene is problematic
Polystyrene breaks into small particles that persist in the environment and harm wildlife. It is non-biodegradable and costly to recycle. Reducing your use of polystyrene products is the most effective way to minimise its environmental impact.
