Spirit Bottle Recycling: what you need to know
Spirit bottles – used for whisky, vodka, gin and other liquors – are typically made from clear or coloured glass and designed to be sturdy, reusable, and fully recyclable. Like other glass containers, they can be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality, making them an important part of sustainable waste practices.
However, due to their heavy design and often elaborate closures, correct preparation before recycling is key to ensuring they’re processed effectively.
Proper recycling of spirit bottles
Empty all remaining liquid and rinse the bottle to remove residue. Remove plastic pourers or metal caps and dispose of them according to local recycling rules—some may be recyclable, while others must go to landfill. Broken spirit bottles should only be recycled if your council accepts broken glass.
Why glass recycling matters
Recycling glass reduces energy usage, conserves natural materials like sand and limestone, and diverts heavy materials from landfill. Glass bottles placed in the correct bin can be melted down and made into new bottles, jars or insulation – supporting a circular economy for packaging waste.
